The Sea of Faces

I can only watch and wait as time erases
all the ink I’ve dribbled throughout the years,
leaving me lost in a sea of faces.

There are seventy billion fingers as the case is,
and the products of these ten (created over many years)
I can only watch and wait as time erases.

Can you remember the minute you were born into the human race?
I don’t, and it won’t remember me, either—
I’m drowning in a sea of faces.

A note struck on a violin or a bass is
a sound that, though at first bright and clear,
I can only watch and wait as time erases.

Like whiteout, it removes all traces.
It is the greatest of all my fears—
that I’ll one day drown in a sea of faces.

It will happen to all but the best masterpieces—
to this and everything I hold dear—
I can only watch as time erases,
as I’m lost in a sea of faces.
