Glass Promise

I held up your ball of glass promises
for the world to notice.
Curious as to why I couldn’t ever
see through them.

Transparency was never
apparent to me

Because I dug deep
into your charcoal heart
and lit it
on fire

Sweeping the ashes
under the bed
hidden away with the
ghosts and guilt

I dropped your glass ball of promises
at my feet, hollow and intangible

It shattered at the first
touch of concrete

All of the backbiting and
bloodied pride only taught us
to rely on gravity to
keep us
honest.
